Greetings! My name is Mark A. Garlick, and I am a freelance
illustrator, author and computer animator based in
Hove, GB.As an artist I specialise in earth sciences, technology,
astronomy, space and science fiction, but my writing focuses mainly on astronomy.
Like many
artists I began my career by getting dirty with tubes of paint, and occasionally I do still
work with traditional media such as acrylic or oil pastels. But these days I am primarily a
digital artist. For most of my career I have used Windows. Photoshop was always my main tool,
alongside 3D software such as Blender and 3DS Max. The latter I use for
animations, alongside (until recently) Adobe After Effects to work on them in
post-production. However, I have now switched to Linux. Photoshop works poorly on Linux,
while After Effects and 3ds Max don't work at all. So I am using GIMP
for stills now, Blender exclusively for 3D, and DaVinchi Resolve for video
editing. I also have a YouTube channel.
My background? I have a degree in astronomy from University College London (UCL), and a
PhD in astrophysics from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. After I finished my PhD,
I did three years of research at Sussex University, in the UK, specialising in close
binary stars called
cataclysmic binaries. But by the time I reached the end of my contract,
it had become clear that professional astronomy was not for me, and I decided on a career
change.
Now, self-trained in illustration, I run a small company called Mark Garlick Words and
Pictures Ltd and I have never looked back. I have written and/or illustrated many
books, and my images have appeared in their hundreds in other
books, publications and in advertising.
No artist or writer can survive without clients. So I welcome your commissions!
Client feedback
I have worked with Mark for a few years now, on a range of animations for the
stock footage library that I manage. He understands our needs quickly, and has
produced a clean and consistent body of work in very good time. I would have no
hesitation in recommending him to others.
Science Photo Library
We regularly turn to Mark to illustrate our astronomy and astrophysics research
stories. Not only is his work stunning, he is fast, reliable, and quickly and easily
grasps the science involved having himself a PhD in astrophysics. His academic
background means he works well with our researchers but he also copes extremely
well with annoying PR folk such as myself.
University of Warwick
Mark has a detailed and precise illustration style that also manages to be
highly expressive. He is therefore a fantastic prospect for non-fiction artwork,
which is the type of work we commission on a regular basis.
